The Watchman is a Tier 2 Mercenary infantry unit. They can be recruited from most taverns or sometimes acquired as prisoners after defeating enemy forces. They have a basic wage of 3 denars and can be upgraded to Mercenary Guard or Mercenary Scout for 25 denars.

Which leads me to believe that lore wise, kern is just a Battanian way of referring to enlisted men, like their tier 1 and 2 units. But in the case of the Kern unit tree, it might just be referencing the units in the tree as light infantry.
